The Special Council Meeting for Community Recognition convened at 6:12 p.m. on May 22, 2013 in the Council Chamber.  Mayor Frank Scarpitti presided.

 

 

 

On behalf of Council, Mayor Frank Scarpitti welcomed members of the public to the Special Council Meeting for Community Recognition.  He noted the purpose of the meeting is to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made contributions to the community of Markham.

2.         PRESENTATIONS

 

 

(1)        RECOGNITION OF MARY CREIGHTON
            - RECIPIENT OF 2013 HIGH FIVE CHAMPION AWARD (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized Mary Creighton, Director of Recreation, for receiving the 2013 HIGH FIVE Champion Award.

 

The Award is presented by Parks and Recreation Ontario and recognizes the outstanding achievements of individuals and organizations that have enhanced the quality of life for Ontario's citizens.  Mayor Frank Scarpitti acknowledged that the award recognizes the benefits of recreation to a vibrant community.

 

 

(2)        CITY OF MARKHAM – WINNER OF
            2012 COMMUNITY CONSERVATION AWARD
            PRESENTED BY THE ONTARIO POWER AUTHORITY (OPA)
            (150,000 – 500,000 POPULATION CATEGORY) (12.2.6)

 

Council received the 2012 Community Conservation Award (150,000 – 500,000 population category), presented to the City of Markham by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA).

 

Two milestones laid the groundwork for this award: the creation of the Markham Energy Conservation Office (MECO) in 2005, and the publication of the Greenprint in 2011.

MECO pioneered energy policy in Markham, establishing a commitment to bold projects and sustained effort.  The Greenprint, Markham’s community sustainability plan, codified energy and climate as a strategic priority within the City’s sustainability vision and integrated energy conservation with system-level thinking.

 

Mayor Frank Scarpitti noted the City of Markham's roof top solar panels for the Civic Centre and 8100 Warden Avenue are the first municipal projects to be included in the Ontario Power Authority's Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) Program.

(3)        ASPHALT RECYCLING & RECLAIMING ASSOCIATION'S (ARRA)
            2013 AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN FULL-DEPTH RECLAMATION (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized Mr. Paul Ingham, Director of Operations, City of Markham, for receiving the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association's (ARRA) 2013 Award for Excellence in Full-Depth Reclamation.

 

The award is given in tribute to Mr. Ingham's unprecedented vision, development, and commitment to the Full Depth Reclamation with Formed Asphalt stabilization program in the City of Markham.

(4)        PRESENTATION OF DIVERSITY CARVING
            TO THE CITY OF MARKHAM (12.2.6)

 

Patrick Shaw, Executive Director, York Technology Alliance, on behalf of the artist Harry Beauchamp, presented the diversity carving to Council.  He noted the York Technology Alliance is pleased to have an opportunity to recognize the City of Markham for its commitment to diversity.  He also provided a brief background on the artist and carving.

 

On behalf of Members of Council, Mayor Frank Scarpitti thanked Partrick Shaw and noted the carving reflects the many faces of Markham.  He also noted the 2011 census demonstrated that Markham is the most diverse City in Canada, a community that is welcoming and engaging to all.

 


 

(5)        RECOGNITION OF MENAKA THAKKAR'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized Dr. Menaka Thakkar for receiving the 2013 Laureate for Dance of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards (GGPAA) for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.

 

Created in 1992 under the distinguished patronage of the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hntyshyn, the GGPAA are presented annually to Canadians whose accomplishments have inspired and enriched the cultural life of our country.

 

 

(6)        2013 MARKHAM DISTRICT ENERGY SUSTAINABILITY
            BURSARY AWARDS CEREMONY (12.2.6)

 

Mr. Bruce Ander, President and CEO, Markham District Energy Inc., provided background information on the Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary.

 

In celebration of its 10th anniversary in 2010, Markham District Energy (MDE) established the Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary to help cultivate and nurture this environmental leadership.  The Bursary encourages and rewards graduating Markham high school students who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence and participation in environmental extracurricular, volunteer and community service activities; and who intend to study sciences related to the environment full-time at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

 

Council extended congratulations to the recipients of the 2013 Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary. The recipients are:

(7)        RECOGNITION OF YORK SOUTH SILVER KNIGHTS
            U12 MAJOR ATOM GIRLS
            (GOLD MEDAL WINNER AT
            ONTARIO CUP PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP) (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized the Under 12 Major Atom Girls of the York South Silver Knights for capturing the Gold Medal at the Ontario Cup Provincial Championship held on March 24, 2013, presented by the Ontario Basketball Association.  Members of the team included:

Council recognized Markham Little Theatre's (MLT) achievements including:

 

1.         Theatre Ontario Festival Awards and Nominations

 

-     Best Male in a Supporting Role - Nomination - Steve Birtles

-     Best Female in a Supporting Role - Ann Maria Hurle

-     Best Female in a Leading Role - Michele Browne

 

2.         MLT was successful in receiving 12 nominations for excellence in community theatre.  Of these, five were given THEAS for being the best in Central Ontario:

(10)      CITY OF MARKHAM - WINNER OF 2012-2013
            GOLD SMART COMMUTE WORKPLACE AWARD (12.2.6)

 

Council received the 2012-2013 Gold Smart Commute Workplace Award, presented to the City of Markham by Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill.  Flo McLellan, Program Director, Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill, presented the award.

 

By achieving a Gold Workplace designation from its previous Silver status, the City of Markham has demonstrated outstanding commitment through leadership, innovation and a focus on measuring success and achieving significant positive outcomes.

 

 

(11)      TED SCAYSBROOK MEMORIAL AWARD RECIPIENT (12.2.6)

 

Council presented the Friends of the Markham Museum Board Ted Scaysbrook Memorial Award to Gunter Langhorst for his outstanding volunteer service to the Markham Museum.

 

Bill Crothers, Chair, and John Buie, Past Chair, Friends of the Markham Museum Board, were in attendance with respect to this award presentation.   Council acknowledged Jean Scaysbrook, wife of the late Ted Scaysbrook, who was in attendance.
