The meeting convened at the hour of 7:20 p.m.

 

The Chair welcomed Regional Councillor Jack Heath as the Committee’s new Council member.  The Chair requested clarification from Regional Councillor Heath of any new appointments to the Committee; Regional Councillor Heath advised that he would confirm any new appointments with the Chair by early next week.

 

1.         MINUTES OF FIRST MARKHAM ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE MEETING IN 2004 HELD ON FEBRUARY 18, 2004

 

            Connie Weber requested a change to the minutes relative to the last suggestion made by the Committee: “It was noted that the jogging track is not appropriate accessible for the physically challenged”.  Following general discussion, the Committee agreed to the proposed change.

 

THE TOWN OF MARKHAM ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS:

THAT the minutes of the Town of Markham Accessibility Committee meeting held on February 18, 2004, be adopted, as amended.

 

2.         ACCESSIBILITY AUDITS 2004

 

The matter was deferred to the next meeting on May 19, 2004.

 


3.         PROVINCIAL CONSULTATION ON THE ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

 

There was general discussion on the report from the Community Services and Housing Committee, York Region, which was adopted by Regional Council at its meeting of March 25, 2004. This report provides recommendations to the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario as part of the Provincial consultation on the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001.  Further consideration of this matter was deferred to the next meeting on May 19, 2004.

 

4.         COMMITTEE PROCEDURAL VIDEO

 

The Committee viewed the video commissioned by the Clerk’s Department, which provided a brief guideline of procedural practices.

 

5.         CITY OF CORNWALL

STRONGER LEGISLATION ON MOTORIZED WHEELCHAIRS AND SCOOTERS UPON STREETS AND SIDEWALKS

 

There was general discussion on the letter from the City of Cornwall and it was agreed that the Chair would send an e-mail to the City Clerk requesting a copy of both the proposed by-law and the report by the Transportation Engineering Department on the regulation of wheelchairs on City highways and sidewalks for this Committee’s review and comment.

 

6.         UNFINISHED BUSINESS – n/a

 

7.         OTHER BUSINESS – The Chair requested the Committee recording secretary contact the Town Solicitor to confirm her attendance at the next meeting of the Accessibility committee on May 19 proposed to be held at the new Seniors Centre at Bayview Avenue and John Street.

There was no new business.

            The next scheduled meeting of the Accessibility Committee is on May 19, 2004.
