The public information meeting, dealing with the proposed increase in water rates, convened at 7.45 p.m.

PRESENTATIONS

Ms. B. Cribbett, Treasurer, was in attendance and gave a brief presentation of the proposed increase in water rates. It was stated that the Region of York was proposing a 5% increase in their water rate, and as a result, it was proposed that rates in Markham would be increased by the same proportion. The proposed increase would increase the rate from $1.2200/m³ to $1.2810/m³.

The Committee sought general clarification of the economics of the water supply in Markham. It was stated that the City of Toronto provides water to the Region of York, which in turn provides it to the Town of Markham. Any increase in the supply costs will result in an increase in the Town’s rates to consumers.
