Subject: Donation to the Proposed YMCA in Markham

Dear Andy:

Please advise the Committee of the Whole that at a meeting of the Markham Hydro Distribution Inc. Board of Directors (“Board”) held on February 19, 2004, the Board approved a cash donation of $100,000 to the proposed YMCA campus in Markham. The after tax cost of the donation to Markham Hydro is $65,000.

Background

A presentation by Ms. Debra Bond-Gorr, General Manager of the YMCA Markham Healthy Communities Campaign was made to the Board on September 15, 2003 on the proposed YMCA campus at the corner of 407 and Kennedy Road. The presentation concluded with a request for financial support for the YMCA campaign.

Staff was requested to prepare a report outlining the various options of providing financial support to the new YMCA campus campaign.

Staff presentations were made to the Board on November 17, 2003 and February 19, 2004. The Board deliberated on the matter at the November and February board meetings and concluded with the decision to donate $100,000 to the campaign.
