SUBJECT:

Opening of Angus Glen Community Centre - Impact on Public Skating

RECOMMENDATION:

That the report titled Opening of Angus Glen Community Centre - Impact on Public Skating be received as information.

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this report is to follow up on the request by Council at its meeting held on May 25, 2004, that staff report back on the impact of the two (2) new Angus Glen skating rinks on the availability of public skating time within the Town.

BACKGROUND:

At its meeting held on May 25, 2004, Council approved the ice allocation schedule for 2004-2005 and requested that staff report back on the impact of the two (2) new Angus Glen skating rinks on the availability of public skating time within the Town.

With the addition of the two new arenas at the Angus Glen Community Centre, prime time ice availability increased 148 hours, from 592 total hours in 2002-2003 to 740 total hours in the 2003-2004 ice season.

Public Skate availability increased by 76% from 21 hours to 37 hours, a total increase of 16 hours per week.  Every session is now a standard two hours in length.  Poor performing sessions were eliminated and popular, high demand sessions increased.

The Public Skate Policy prohibits cancellation of public skate for any reason.

Attached as Appendix A is a chart indicating the participation figures for the winters of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004.  The data was calculated by obtaining the revenue figures from the various facilities and dividing it by an average admission fee of $3 to determine the approximate number of participants for the year.  This figure was then divided by the number of sessions per year to provide an approximate average of how many people participated in each session.
