Community Service Groups

 

A Community Service Group (CSG) is defined as “Any Markham based, not for profit community organization consisting of seventy-five (75) percent residents of the Town of Markham The prime purpose of the group must be to “Provide recreation or community service to the Town of Markham

 

Membership must be open to all eligible residents of the Town.

 

Fundraising that is involved in the function must have eighty (80) percent of the proceeds remaining in the Town and must also be used for charitable purposes in order to qualify for the Community Service Group rating.

 

Groups eligible for this classification include but are not limited to:

 

                        SERVICE CLUBS

                        COMMUNITY SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS

                        GIRL GUIDES AND BOY SCOUTS

                        NEWCOMERS CLUBS

                        SENIORS GROUPS

                        CULTURAL GROUPS

                        RATEPAYERS ORGANIZATIONS

                        MUNICIPAL DEPARTMENTS

                        FESTIVAL COMMITTEES

                        RELIGIOUS CONGREGATIONS

 

The Community Service Group designation entitles the group to a reduced rate of approximately thirty (30) percent less than the Commercial Rate.  The rate allows for use of a designated area but does not include setup and takedown or cleanup of the area afterwards.

 

Community Service Groups are entitled to a maximum of two (2) hall rentals a year at the reduced CSG rate.  Management reserves the right to extend these rental privileges further at their discretion.

 

CSG groups may use facilities that are available for their yearly registrations.  These areas are provided free of charge, if available.  Groups must book well in advance and areas are available on a strict first-come, first-served basis.  Rental charges will apply for use of space for annual general meetings.

 


Exceptions to the seventy-five (75) percent resident rule for CSG classification will be made if:

 

“An organization is regional, provincial or national and the function services the Town of Markham residents and is not duplicated by local organizations.”

 

“An organization is based outside of Markham but the proceeds from the function are to be used for charitable purposes within the Town.  The charity must be clearly designated and approved by the Town of Markham, Clerks Department.”

 

Members of Council

 

Members of Council to use the designated meeting rooms free of charge for public meetings relating to Ward, Town or Regional issues based on availability.  Free use of the designated meeting rooms for election-related or personal use is not authorized.

 

The following meeting rooms

 

                        Centennial Community Centre – Community Meeting Room

                        Crosby Memorial Community Centre – South Boardroom

                        Milliken Mills Community Centre – One of Meeting Rooms A, B, C, or D

                        Thornhill Community Centre – Craft Room, Conference Room

                        Markham Village Community Centre – Community Meeting Room

                        Armadale Community Centre – Meeting Room

                        Rouge River Community Centre – Poolside Lounge

 

are available to Community Service Groups and Members of Council at no cost based on the following criteria:

 

n      must be classified as CSG and

n      must be currently utilizing Town facilities, either indoor or outdoor

or

n      current member of Town of Markham Council

 

n      room availability

n      first come, first served

n      size of the meeting

 

For any other rentals, the group and Members of Council will pay the CSG rate.

 

In the event that a community service group or Member of Council needs a larger room or hall than those listed above, the regular Community Service Group Rate (CSG) will apply.
