RECOMMENDATION:
THAT
Council approve financial support, in the amount of $1,000.00, to the Markham
African Caribbean Association for the hosting of the 2005 Black History
Celebration during the month of February.
PURPOSE:
To request Council’s financial support for the 2005 Black History Celebration.
BACKGROUND:
The Town Clerk has received a letter dated December 21, 2004 from the Markham African Caribbean Association requesting financial support in the amount of $5,000.00 for the hosting of 2 programs during the 2005 Black History Celebration.
The Association’s annual grant request for 2005 has been increased to $1550.00. This is an increase of $550 over the 2004 grant due to increased costs. The additional $3550.00 request is for a one time expenditure to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa on Canadian soil and to cover the cost of hosting of a one day exhibition of the International African Inventors Museum to be held on February 26, 2005. Attached, as Appendix “A”, is their request.
In 2004, the group was funded $1000.00, and in years 2001 to 2003, $750.00. The recommended funding for this event in the proposed 2005 Grants budget to be approved by Council in the Celebrate Markham category is $1000.00. Staff is recommending that Council continue to support the Black History Celebration at the same level as 2004.
