PURPOSE:

The purpose is to seek Council approval to proceed with two capital projects for the Varley Art Gallery.

BACKGROUND:

The Varley Art Gallery will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2007.  The feature exhibit, “Varley Portraits” will open in May and will run till September.  This exhibit will then go on National tour.  The art work for this show will start coming in early in the New Year.  As part of the 2007 capital budget submission the gallery has identified two projects that require early capital approval in order to complete the work in January before the major artworks start arriving on site.

The two projects are:

#7528      Painting Interior Gallery & Epoxy Floor Paint                        $25,700

#7630      Gallery Floor Refinishing                                                       $11,600

                                                                        TOTAL                                    $37,300

A “window” has been built into the exhibition schedule from January 15 to 21 to accommodate the capital projects that will not impact the art operations.  Since attendance in January is typically lower, the major art works are scheduled to start arriving in February; therefore we are seeking early capital approval to complete these two projects.
