CHRONOLOGY OF TMA
DEVELOPMENT IN MARKHAM
The Town has
been working with key stakeholders in the business community, transportation
industry and other governments over the past few years to obtain support and
build the partnerships required to form Transportation Management Associations
to serve Markham businesses. The Hwy. 404/7 corridor and Markham Centre were
identified as areas of current and future employment that would benefit from
the activities and services of a TMA, and the following is a chronology of key
interaction points during the organization and program development process:
January 7-8, 2002 – Portland
Sessions to introduce local business and decision makers to the American
Transportation Demand Management and TMA experience.
February 12, 2003 - Launched “Commuter Options” program for Town staff in partnership
with Pollution Probe.
March 12, 2003 – A primer workshop, hosted in cooperation with Economic
Development, for select businesses regarding the Markham Transportation
Planning Study (MTPS) and the principals of transportation demand management.
May 12, 2003 – Second primer for businesses focusing on the development of a
Transportation Management Association and the value to our community.
September 29, 2003 – Mayor’s kickoff breakfast for the Markham Centre Transportation
Management Initiative.
November 24, 2003 - Transit and TMA Partnership Development
“Workshop” facilitated by Rick Williams, Lloyd District TMA – Portland, Oregon.
November 24, 2003 – First steering team
meetings of the Markham Centre area and 404 /7 TMA initiatives, facilitated by Rick Williams, Lloyd District
TMA – Portland, Oregon.
December 2003 – Transport Canada
approval for the Urban Transportation Showcase Program – GTA Smart Commute
Association of which Markham is a partner.
February
2004 – Markham Centre TMA working meeting and
inter-municipal staff meetings to plan and coordinate the 404/7 area TMA.
March 2004 – Marketing and
Communication consultant engaged to support the development and introduction of
the Smart Commute 404-7 TMA.
July 7, 2004 – Official
launch of the Smart Commute 404-7 TMA a partnership with the Markham Board of
Trade, Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Richmond Hill, York
Region, area businesses and with financial support from Transport Canada –
Urban Transportation Showcase Program.
September 2004 – Organizational
and governance review and business planning process, established with
consultant support, and initiated in partnership with the Town of Richmond Hill and the Smart
Commute 404-7 TMA Steering Team.
October 2004 – Markham Centre
TMI Steering Team invited to participate in afore mentioned planning process.
November 23, 2004 – Options for a
consolidated TMA model presented to the Markham Centre TMI Steering Team by the
Chair of the Smart Commute 404-7 TMA Steering Team for their consideration and
approval – passed.
