In order to execute the outdoor/field
testing component, Motorola is seeking approval from the Town of
The outdoor deployment will consist of access points and wireless backhaul devices. Motorola will perform a coverage area design and anticipates that approximately 20 devices in total will be installed on street lights and/or hydro poles within a 1 sq. mile coverage area.
It is important to note that the outdoor deployment is for Motorola internal R&D and testing use only. No public customers will be live on the system (although the system may be used for demonstrations).
Approval to proceed with the outdoor
deployment needs to be secured by the mid March 2005 timeframe to permit full
deployment by
The anticipated duration of the deployment
is 1-2 years. In addition, there are no
plans for expansion beyond the 1 sq. mile coverage area at this point.
Motorola plans to engage a 3rd party contractor to install the necessary equipment and make appropriate electrical connections.
A picture of a typical access point/wireless backhaul device is included below. The new product will differ slightly in dimension but will have the same look and enclosure.
