SUBJECT:

Award of the Lifesaving Society David W. Pretty Cup to the Town of Markham, Aquatic Staff

 

 

 

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

THAT the report titled “Award of the Lifesaving Society David W. Pretty Cup to the Town of Markham, Aquatic Staff” be received as information;

 

AND THAT the following staff of the Recreation Services Department be recognized for their contribution:

 

Lisa Young

Sheri Krauss

Susan Bennett

Janice Carroll

Karen Carlin

                                                Barbara Smith–Dorland

                                    Kerry Wakefield

 

AND FURTHER THAT the staff be invited to attend the Council Meeting to be held on May 24, 2005 for an official presentation.

 

 

PURPOSE:

 

To recognize the dedication of all our Aquatic staff who teach and program the Lifesaving Society’s activities.

 

BACKGROUND:

 

The Town of Markham has won for the tenth year consecutively the Lifesaving Society Ontario Branch’s David W. Pretty Cup, formerly called the Council Cup for the largest Lifesaving program in municipalities with a population range of 100,000 to 250,000.  The Town of Markham’s three indoor pools won by a large margin over the Town of Oakville (the runner-up).

 

The trophy was presented at the Lifesaving Society’s Annual General Meeting on April 1, 2005 in the Council Chambers, Town of Markham.  Sheri Krauss, Susan Bennett, Janice Carroll, Kerry Wakefield, Barbara Smith-Dorland and Karen Carlin accepted the award on behalf of the Town of Markham.

 

The Lifesaving Society programs develop swimming, lifesaving, lifeguarding and leadership skills for our youth and young adults.  These programs train our youth and young adults to not only develop their own skills, but also help instil a commitment to help others in the community.
