The Chair welcomed Keith Bray, President & CEO of the Markham Board of Trade.  Mr. Bray gave a brief overview of the Markham Board of Trade (MBT) and its possible role in assisting the Committee through its connection to businesses throughout the Town. The MBT also has ties with provincial/federal agencies to get the word out to make businesses and the community at large more aware of the needs of people with disabilities.  Mr. Bray invited the Committee to submit articles for the publication prepared by the MBT, published quarterly, that could focus on ways and means to make businesses readily accessible to all residents of the community.

The Chair will draft an article and provide it to the Committee for discussion at the next meeting; the next MBT publication will be February, 2006.

5.         PRESENTATION BY MANAGER – MARKHAM MUSEUM

The Chair called on George Phillips, Manager, Markham Museum, to give a short presentation on the Markham Museum and its new Reception Centre.  Committee members took a tour of the new Centre and were impressed with its accessibility and displays.

George Phillips gave a brief history of the Museum and its role in the community over the years; it is an evolving project, which must recognize the growing diversity of the community.  There is a three phase process – the new Reception Centre was built to better accommodate all visitors to the Museum site – phase two revolves around the Ward building site while phase three consists of the possibility of a Heritage Carnival site with antique rides, carousels, etc. – negotiations are underway with the Conklin family. Mr. Phillips also stated that work is ongoing to improve the pathways and access to the 26 buildings on site as well as the Mount Joy School, in a timely manner.
