The meeting convened at the hour of 3:35 p.m. with Mr. R. Hunn in the Chair.

 

 

1.         MINUTES OF THE MARKHAM ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON ACCESSIBILITY MEETING HELD ON MAY 17, 2006

 

THE MARKHAM ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON ACCESSIBILITY RECOMMENDS:

 

That the minutes of the Town of Markham Advisory Committee on Accessibility held on May 17, 2006 be adopted.

2.         DISCUSSION OF PRIORITIES FOR 2006          

 

There was discussion concerning the Committee’s priorities for 2006. It was suggested that members bring forward suggestions to the Chair over the summer and that these be voted on in September. Some ideas were put forward including the creation of a central clearing house for accessibility-related complaints, the launch of an awareness campaign aimed at commercial businesses and a drive to enforce disabled parking space violations.

 

The Clerk agreed to issue a memorandum to members requesting that they submit additional ideas to the Chair over the summer. The ideas will then be discussed at the September meeting of the Committee.

 

 

3.         YORK REGION SAFETY VILLAGE UPDATE

 

There was brief discussion on the York Region Safety Village.

 

 

4.         COMMUNICATIONS

 

            a)         A memorandum dated April 24, 2006 from Ms. Cordelia Abankwa-Harris, Director, Community Services, Housing and Housing Department, Policy and Program Support Services, Province of Ontario, to the Municipal Staff Reference Group regarding Standards Development under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) was presented.

 

            There was brief discussion on this letter.

 

 

5.         NEW BUSINESS

 

            a)         Accessibility Guidelines

 

            Mr. A. Wolfe, Project Consultant, advised that the Town will be carrying out accessibility audits of two (2) facilities over the summer – the Civic Centre and Milliken Mills Community Centre – with a report to follow in September. Additionally, staff are developing guidelines that can be applied to new private developments.

 

            b)         Committee Business Cards

 

            The Committee requested that staff consider the possibility of supplying business cards to Committee members.

 

            c)         Miscellaneous

 

            The Committee agreed that the start time of 3.30 p.m. is more suitable. Additionally, the Chair advised of his appointment to the York Region Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
