Jazz festival - Here we go again:

Special thanks to our new Unionville councillor for standing up for the street and voting against granting an outside group (the Markham Jazz Festival) the right to close Main Street and drop its festival in the middle of our ongoing business and during our ongoing festival. Unionville is a major tourism district – not a playground for the whims of the deputy mayor and his festival.

WHY IMPORTANT? THEY BRING VENDORS & DUSRUPTIONS TO THE STREET AND THEY TAKE EVERYTHING(MARKHAM MAIN STREET). OUR STREET IS NOT TO BE USED BY OTHERS WHO MINE OUR IDEAS, OUR EFFORTS OUR TOURIST, OUR GRANTS. WE ALREADY HAVE STREET PROGRAMED. COSTS US MONEY – GRANTS. DONE AT THE WHIM OF THE DEPUTY MAYOR – WELL WHAT IS NEXT? REGIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL? REMEMBER THE RODEO. Markham main street trying to fight outsiders as well. IT IS OUTRAGEOUS AND THEY BURN UP THOUSANDS AND TOUSANDS OF TAXPAYERS MONEY IN THE PROCESS.

Too bad our councillor was alone on this -  he was alone in voting with his constituents – remember these things come election time. We all vote. On behalf of the businesses who VOLUNTEER AND RESPECT THIS STREET – WHO work so hard to maintain this street as a class “A” functioning heritage district 365 days of the year – thank you Don Hamilton.

This necessitates an election in our ward. We need to assure that a strong supporter of Unionville and in particular Unionville Business is elected.

1.      Flowers – meeting with Town staff next week to discuss 2010. More flower coverage the objective. As per January meeting, will bring back UBIA plans to enhance the street all year long at our next meeting in March.

2.      Paid Parking – Markham Parking on the move. Still looking for something in writing from the Town to confirm that there will be no paid parking on or around Main Street Unionville. Tried this in 2005 and our collective efforts stopped this. We are watching this issue closely, but the more emails the better to the mayor, Don Hamilton and Joe Virgilio the better

3.      Family Day & Valentines Day – lots of people thanks to those open

4.      Last weekend – good weather – advertising brings people out

5.      2010 Brochure – thanks to those who took ads – proofs coming around this week

6.      Markham Centre – watching this issue, population not sufficient transit & roads for condos & placement. Food belt, population, Unionville character. Unionville Road signs.

7.      Signage @ Main & 7 and Carlton & Kennedy – planned for May/June installation

8.      Bus project – coming along, trying to put all in place

9.      Unionville Summer Concert Series – continues this year – in our 9th year. Bands on the street

10.  Unionville 2010 festival & events – schedule handed out at last meeting – will include with next minutes. Lots happening – so important not to have other groups try to “mine off” our efforts and take from Unionville.
