4.         MARKHAM HUMAN RESOURCES UPDATE

Cheryl McConney-Wilson informed the Committee that training on the Diversity Action Plan has commenced in a top-down manner, starting with senior management. The Committee discussed the prospect of having a subcommittee on the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination (CMARD). The Committee agreed that members of the proposed subcommittee must have some experience and expertise in race relations. This is to ensure that newly selected subcommittee members will be able to perform and fulfill tasks delineated by CMARD. It is necessary for the Committee to write out a job description outlining the specification of this position in a detailed yet undaunted manner. Once councilors are assigned to the Race Relations Committee, decisions can be made on the establishment of the CMARD subcommittee.

5.         SUB-COMMITTEE UPDATES

The theme of the 2011 Many Faces of Markham event is “Waving Flags”. Furthermore, the Committee is interested in having corporate sponsorship and corporate representatives in attendance during this year’s event.  Additional meetings have been scheduled this month to further discuss details of this event.
