PURPOSE:

To recommend to Council that the James Bowman House at 4165 19th Avenue be designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.

BACKGROUND:

The owners of the property at 4165 19th Avenue, Stephen and Kira Walker, have consented to the designation of the James Bowman House on the subject lands under IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. The purpose of the designation is to ensure the long-term protection of the building and to provide the current and future owners access to available funding programs for the restoration of  the designated heritage property.  Heritage Markham at its meeting of March 12, 2003 recommended that the James Bowman House at 4165 19th Avenue be designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.

DISCUSSION:

The James Bowman House is a significant heritage building

The James Bowman House is listed on the Markham Inventory of Heritage Buildings.  The house is a good example of a village cottage built in the influence of the Georgian Style in the 3rd quarter of the 19th Century.   An outline of the heritage attributes of the dwelling in support of its designation is included in the Heritage Designation Report, which is attached as Appendix ‘A’.

It is recommended that the James Bowman House at 4165 19th Avenue be designated under the Heritage Act.
