DATE OF MEETING:

2004-May-04

SUBJECT:

Designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act

The Udell-Hamilton House & Lunau Barn, 6 Aileen Lewis Court

RECOMMENDATION:

That Heritage Markham’s recommendation to designate the The Udell Hamilton House and Lunau Barn at 6 Aileen Lewis Court under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act be approved;

And that the Clerks Department be authorised to:

·        publish and serve Council’s Notice of Intention to Designate as per the requirements of the Act; and

·        prepare the Designation by-law for this property.

PURPOSE:

To recommend to Council that the Udell-Hamilton House and Lunau Barn at 6 Aileen Lewis Court be designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.

BACKGROUND:

In April 2004, the Udell-Hamilton house was relocated from its original location at 7192 19th Avenue to the property at 6 Aileen Lewis Court  within the Markham Heritage Estates Subdivision.  It was threatened with demolition due to long-term abandonment and neglect at its original location.

The owner of the Udell-Hamilton House, Mr. Michael Bradshaw, has also obtained approval in principle from the Town of Markham to relocate the Lunau Barn from Town owned property at the entrance to the Markham Heritage Estates to the property at 6 Aileen Lewis Court.

The Agreement of  Purchase and Sale for the property at 6 Aileen Lewis Court allows the Town of Markham to designate the Udell-Hamilton House and Lunau Barn under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.  Heritage Markham, at its meeting of April 14, 2004 recommended to Council that the buildings be designated.

OPTIONS/DISCUSSION:

The Udell-Hamilton House is a significant heritage building

The Udell-Hamilton House is listed on the Markham Inventory of Heritage Buildings.   It is an excellent example of a 3rd Quarter -19th Century, Queen Anne Revival Style farmhouse, built of wood, which was extended from an earlier Georgian structure.  The architecture of the Udell-Hamilton House is unique in the Town of Markham.  An outline of the historical and architectural reasons for designation are included in the Heritage Designation Report which is attached as  Appendix ‘A’.

The Lunau Barn is a significant heritage building

The Lunau Barn is an excellent and rare example of a late 19th Century bank barn with a gable roof.  Due to their originally intended agricultural uses, frame barns are typically more difficult to preserve in modern developments.  The preservation of the Lunau Barn at 6 Aileen Lewis Court represents a significant opportunity to preserve an endangered Markham building type within the context of its original farmstead in the Markham Heritage Estates subdivision. An outline of the historical and architectural reasons for designation are included in the Heritage Designation Report for the Udell-Hamilton House.

It is recommended that the house and barn be designated under the Heritage Act.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

No financial implications are to be considered in this report

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Preservation of the Udell-Hamilton House and Lunau Barn at 6 Aileen Lewis Court represent excellent examples of environmental management through the recycling of a built heritage resources.

ENGAGE 21ST CONSIDERATIONS:

This project aligns with the corporate goal of achieving a Quality Community through recognizing, promoting and strengthening a sense of community

BUSINESS UNITS CONSULTED AND AFFECTED:
