RECOMMENDATION:
THAT the “Sheridan-Paterson House” at 8303
Warden Avenue be approved for designation under Part IV of the Ontario
Heritage Act, as recommended by Heritage Markham;
AND THAT the Clerk’s Department be authorized
to: * publish and serve Council’s Notice of
Intention to Designate as per the requirements of the Act;
and *
prepare the Designation By-law for the property. |
PURPOSE:
To recommend to Council that the
“Sheridan-Paterson House” (historical reference) at 8303 Warden Avenue be designated
under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage
value and interest.
BACKGROUND:
The Sheridan-Paterson House is listed on the
Markham Inventory of Heritage Buildings.
It is a well-preserved example of an Ontario Classic farmhouse dating
from circa 1855. The building is
identified as a heritage resource within the Markham Centre Secondary Plan
Area, and is one of the few remnants of old
This building was graded as a Group 2 heritage
structure using the Town’s Heritage Building Evaluation System. Heritage
Markham recommended the Sheridan-Paterson House for designation under Part IV
of the Ontario Heritage Act at its meeting of February 11, 2004 (See the
Heritage Markham Extract, Appendix “B.” The property owner and his agent
attended the meeting and support the designation as proposed (i.e. excluding
the modern additions).
OPTIONS/DISCUSSION:
The designation of the Sheridan-Paterson House
will give it protected status to assist with its preservation within the
context of future development on the site.
At present, no planning applications have been made for the subject
property. No issues have arisen with respect to the proposed designation as the
owner and his agent have been involved throughout the process and are in
support.
Should Council decide to proceed
with the recommendation to designate
* publish and serve on the property owner, the Ontario Heritage Foundation and
the public
through
a newspaper advertisement, Council’s notice of intention to designate the
property
as per the requirements of the Act; and
* prepare the designation by-law for the property.
ENGAGE 21ST
CONSIDERATIONS:
Heritage designation helps to achieve
a quality community by recognizing, promoting and protecting a heritage
resource, which strengthens the sense of community.
