RECOMMENDATION:

That the report entitled “Angus Glen Golf Club 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Journal” be received;

And that the Town authorize the Economic Development Department to participate as a sponsor in the journal up to a maximum of $5,000, and to work with the Corporate Communications Department to create a congratulatory message from the Mayor and Council and a Town profile for the Journal.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Angus Glen Golf Club has contracted PGJ Inc. of Markham to produce a 10th Anniversary golf journal to celebrate its ten years in business. There will be 60,000 copies of the journal distributed to patrons at Angus Glen including, golfers, conference attendees, business meetings and functions starting in the Spring, 2005.

Given the widespread distribution opportunities for the journal with 12% of the audience at Angus Glen from outside of Canada, 75% from the Greater Toronto Area, and 13% from the rest of Canada, the Economic Development Department believes that there are five key benefits that may be achieved by the Town’s participation in the journal. The five benefits are: access to an elite clientele including executive level managers and professionals; creating an awareness to the reader of the Town’s High-Tech Capital status which could lead to investment attraction; promotion of the Town’s Economic Development Department as the point of contact for business information including our DVD and newly designed web site; increased revenue at local restaurants and hotels to be promoted in a section of the journal; and it demonstrates the Town’s support for one of our leading community partners.

BACKGROUND:

PGJ Inc. of Markham has been contracted by Angus Glen to produce the anniversary edition. PGJ is also the publisher of the “Professional Golfers Journal” which is used by over 12,500 golf professionals in the USA and Canada, and “The Personal Golfers Journal.”

The journal is intended to be a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Angus Glen Golf Club. It will be a hardcover bound collector’s edition journal containing acid free paper for the preservation of content. PGJ expects 60,000 copies will be published for distribution. The journal will contain sections on: the history of the club from its beginning; descriptions of the North and South Courses and how to play each hole; introduction to the Angus Glen Club House and a description of the facilities available for business and social functions; the Golf Academy and the various junior clinics that are held at Angus Glen; the Bell Canadian Open of 2002, the BMO Women’s Canadian Open, the 2001 Telus Skins Game and the upcoming Bell Canadian Open in 2007; a listing of local restaurants, hotels and night life; and a note section for conference or golfing notes (it is not a daytimer format journal given the wishes of Angus Glen and the expected longevity of the book). With the Town’s support as a sponsor there will be a write up included on Markham.

To date PGJ has enlisted sponsorship from various key organizations including Allstate Insurance, Bank of Montreal, Bell Canada, TD Waterhouse and Pioneer with others to sign on in the near future. The corporate sponsorship rates are typically $29,750 for a one single page colour advertisement and $7,500 for a pocket pro one colour advertisement. Given Economic Development’s limited budget as a public agency, and our limited reliance on print advertising, it is felt that our contribution be limited to $5,000 maximum.
