2.         WELCOME TO NEW MEMBER

The Committee welcomed Ms. Kelly McLeod as a new member to the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee (MPAAC).

3.         UPDATE ON ENVIRONMENTAL ART EVENT: SELECTED

            ARTISTS

Ms. L. Irvine advised that the MPAAC Subcommittee had decided on the following artists as recommended candidates for the Markham Environmental Art Event.

  • Jennie Clark, River Drive Park, Ontario
  • Kylah M. McGlade, Unionville, Ontario
  • Dawn Dale, Gatineau, Quebec
  • Farhad Nargolwalla, Toronto, Ontario

Ms. Irvine reviewed the profiles of the recommended artists, presenting a brief summation of their previous works and intended projects for the upcoming event. The Committee posed various questions regarding the artists including their propensity towards engaging the public in their work and whether the context of Markham’s identity and environmental art was captured by their proposals. Members also requested clarification on the duration in which each project would last, probable installation sites and potential security issues.

Ms. Irvine informed the Committee that further information would be forthcoming regarding the artists and their proposals. Members expressed concerns with respect to the timelines in which the selection, campaign and installation process would unfold. Ms. J. Mcintyre submitted and presented a draft schedule timeline. She advised that the completion of the installations should occur in early to mid July to coordinate with the Communities in Bloom judging which is tentatively planned for that time.

The Committee agreed that it would was essential that MPAAC Members engage their communities regarding the Markham Environmental Art Event. Appreciation was extended to Ms. E. Chong who agreed to act as a personal contact and MPAAC liaison for one of the chosen artists. The Committee decided that three (3) additional Members should be selected to perform a similar role for the remaining artists.

4.         UPDATE ON ENVIRONMENTAL ART EVENT: LAUNCH

Members agreed that due to time restrictions and limited availability, a soft media launch encompassing a press and web release may be more appropriate than hosting a physical event. The Committee decided that an event may be held upon completion of the artist’s installations.

THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS:

That a Markham Public Art Advisory Subcommittee be engaged to produce and direct a media launch for the Markham Environmental Art Event;

And that this Subcommittee be composed of Ms. E. Chong, Ms. J. Mcintyre and Ms. P. Tripathi.

CARRIED

5.         MPAAC MEMBER VISION STATEMENTS
