SUBJECT:

Request for Approval of Culturally Diverse Street Names

RECOMMENDATION:

That Development Services Committee receive the August 30, 2005 staff report titled “Request for Approval of Culturally Diverse Street Names”.

That the proposed street names Moeen and Furhait be placed on the Town’s street name reserve list for approval through an October report to Development Service Committee updating the street name reserve list for the third quarter of 2005.

PURPOSE:

This report is in response to a resident’s request for approval of three culturally diverse street names.

BACKGROUND:

On June 24, 2005, a letter was sent by Furhait Kashmiri to the Clerk requesting that the contents of her letter be read to Council at its meeting on June 28, 2005. This letter was in response to Council’s decision to rename Lahore Road and to apply the name to another future road in the Villages of Fairtree Community (Appendix ‘A’).

The letter also requested that two street names proposed by the Mrs. Kashmiri be considered for approval. This letter was followed by a July 21, 2005, facsimile sent by Mrs. Kashmiri to the Director of Planning and Urban Design (Appendix ‘B’) requesting additional information, as well as the approval of three proposed culturally diverse street names (Fakahria, Moeen and Furhait). A letter was sent by the Director of Planning and Urban Design to Mrs. Kashmiri, as directed by Council, outlining the street name approval process and the Town’s policy of assigning historical and veteran names to streets.

OPTIONS/DISCUSSION:

Staff has forwarded the three street names proposed by Mrs. Kashmiri to the Region of York and the Fire Department for their approval. Two of the three names (Moeen and Furhait) were found acceptable.

It is recommended that the proposed street names Moeen and Furhait be placed on the Town’s street name reserve list for approval through an October report to Development Service Committee updating the street name reserve list for the third quarter of 2005. They will then be available for use in a new development.
