The eighth meeting of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee in 2006 convened at 7:08p.m. with Ms. Judi McIntyre in the Chair.

1.      MINUTES OF THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON July 12, 2006

Without a quorum, adoption of the minutes of July 12, 2006 was tabled.

  1. MUNICIPAL PUBLIC ART PLAN

Ms. Judi McIntyre asked when Jane Perdue would return to present her progress on the development of the public art plan and when the plan can be presented to Council.  Ms. Linda Irvine said she has been in contact with Ms. Perdue and believes she will return for the next committee meeting, but that timing to present to Council is uncertain; the plan would likely be presented to the incoming Council after the November elections.

  1. ENVIRONMENTAL ART EVENT

The committee reviewed the newly printed Environmental Art brochure and the new Arts in Motion quarterly.  Ms. Judi McIntyre agreed to work with the Town of Markham’s corporate communications department to distribute both brochures.

The committee discussed the works produced by the Environmental Art event artists and the outcomes of the 2nd annual event to date.  Ms. Irvine informed the committee that the event has been successful and well received, with press coverage on the CBC and in the Economist, collaboration with student groups and good community participation, particularly in Cornell.  She noted that unfortunately, pieces produced by one of the artists were vandalized, and safety issues were raised concerning the piece produced at the Cornell location.  The committee agreed that guidelines for the materials used, the durability of pieces and safety of the artworks should be provided to artists for future events, along with guidelines concerning how artists work with communities.  Artists should be asked to provide better and clearer drawings for their designs before receiving final sign off.

Ms. Irvine noted that Michael Janzen is performing one last live painting/musical event at AppleFest on September 16 at the Markham Museum and that his paintings will then be displayed at the Varley gallery.  Mr. Giantsopoulos agreed to contact John Ryerson, Manager of the Varley Gallery and to discuss with him how to promote the painting exhibit.

The committee discussed the concluding date for the event.  Ms. Irvine agreed to contact each of the artists to discuss and determine when their pieces will be dismantled.

Members discussed concepts and ideas for future Environmental Art events and the timing of next year’s event.  It was agreed that planning would begin earlier for the 2007 event so that it could take place in spring, allowing for the involvement of schools.

On behalf of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee, Ms. Judi McIntyre acknowledged and thanked Linda Irvine for her excellent work in implementing the 2006 Environmental Art Event.

      4.   NEW BUSINESS

Members expressed concern and discussed ways to mitigate low attendance at MPAAC meetings.  Ms. McIntyre agreed to issue a meeting schedule to all committee members and to seek additional clerical support for timely distribution of agendas and minutes.

      5.   DATE FOR NEXT MEETING

The next meeting of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee will take place Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ontario Room.
