Mr. John H. Neil, Sales Representative, North Country Slate, gave a presentation to the Heritage Markham Committee regarding slate roofing and filed a brochure containing information on slate roofing materials offered by North Country Slate.

THAT Heritage Markham receive the deputation from John Neil of North Country Slate.

4.         SITE PLAN APPROVAL APPLICATION

PROPOSED GARAGE & CARPORT ADDITION (16.11)

The Senior Heritage Planner gave a presentation on this application.

 

Mr. Brian Murphy, Brian Murphy Design & Associates, gave a presentation to the Heritage Markham Committee on the landscaping plans for this property and circulated copies of the plans to the Committee.

 

Mr. Rod Robotham, Architect, and Mr. Howard and Mrs. Vicky Dombrower, the applicants, were also in attendance.

 

Mr. James Makaruk, 24 Deanbank Drive, addressed the Heritage Markham Committee and expressed his concern that the revised plan does not adhere to one of the recommendations from the Architectural Review Sub-Committee that the applicant significantly reduce the paving in front of the garage.

 

The following residents were also in attendance:

 

-           Mr. Peter Sewell, 20 Deanbank Drive; and

-           Mr. David Jones, 38 Deanbank Drive.

 

HERITAGE MARKHAM RECOMMENDS:

 

THAT Heritage Markham has no objection to the addition of an attached 2 car garage to the west side of the house under construction at 22 Deanbank Drive subject to:

·        elimination of the carport;

·        lowering of the height of the garage by a minimum of 2 feet;

·        further reduction of the paved area in front of the garage doors;

·        landscape screening for the paved area in front of the garage doors; and

·        if the maple tree shown in the middle of the paved area in front of the garage doors is removed due to the poor health, another tree be planted to compensate for its removal in a location acceptable to the Town of Markham Urban Design staff.

5.         REQUEST FOR FEEDBACK
280 MAIN STREET NORTH
PROPOSED ADDITION AND NEW DETACHED GARAGE (16.11)

The Senior Heritage Planner gave a presentation on this application.

 

Mr. Russ Gregory, The Gregory Design Group, addressed the Heritage Markham Committee on the proposed addition and new detached garage for the property at 280 Main Street North. He discussed the reasons why the rear kitchen wing should be removed to allow for the rear addition as proposed.

 

Mr. Joe Novello, the applicant, also addressed the Heritage Markham Committee expressing concern for his asthmatic son if the kitchen wing and basement are not renovated properly to remove mould or any other materials that may cause allergic reactions.  The applicant also advised that he would like to proceed with the proposed garage as soon as possible.

 


HERITAGE MARKHAM RECOMMENDS:

 

THAT the proposed addition and new detached garage for 280 Main Street North be referred to the Architectural Review Sub-Committee for consideration and a site visit and that the Architectural Review Sub-Committee be authorized to approve the final design for the garage;

 

AND THAT Heritage Staff be requested to provide information to the Architectural Review Sub-Committee prior to its next meeting on past decisions of the Heritage Markham Committee for additions/renovations similar to this application.

Mr. Clay Libel addressed the Heritage Markham Committee on behalf of Forest Bay Homes respecting this application. It was decided that a site visit is needed to determine if the rear wing is of heritage value.

THAT this application be referred to the Architectural Review Sub-Committee with authority to approve.

THAT Heritage Markham has no objection to the proposed mixed use development at 9506 Highway 48 subject to the heritage building being retained within the development site in a prominent location;

 

AND THAT the owner provides a restoration plan for the exterior of the Albert Wideman House as part of the application;

 

AND FURTHER THAT the Site Plan Agreement require the owner to enter into a Heritage Easement with the Town for the Albert Wideman House, provide two Markham Remembered plaques at the owner’s cost (Albert Wideman House and Andrew Wideman House), and the usual provisions regarding retaining the original fabric of the building, windows, materials, colours, etc.

            POTENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR MARKHAM HERITAGE ESTATES (16.11)

The Senior Heritage Planner gave a presentation on this application. There was some discussion about whether or not it was premature to determine that on-site preservation in the future is not possible.

 

HERITAGE MARKHAM RECOMMENDS:

 

THAT Heritage Markham recommends to Council that the Henry Eby House at 10044 Highway 48 be declared eligible for relocation to Markham Heritage Estates due to its cultural heritage significance as an excellent example of a Pennsylvania German dwelling with an intact “doddy haus” and its precarious state of long-term vacancy and deterioration;

 

AND THAT Heritage Section staff contact the property owner to seek their cooperation in the advertising and availability of the building.

THAT the Heritage Markham meeting on December 14, 2006, be rescheduled to commence at 6:30 p.m. and that the further details regarding the Christmas Party to be held immediately after the meeting be forwarded to all members of the Committee by e-mail.
