Mr. Carmen Naccarato, owner of the property at 94 John Street, addressed the Heritage Markham Committee in support of the demolition permit application for 94 John Street.

 

The Senior Heritage Planner gave a presentation on this application.

 

HERITAGE MARKHAM RECOMMENDS:

 

THAT the demolition permit application for 94 John Street be refused on the basis of the cultural heritage value or interest of this prime example of an early 20th century bungalow and the barn in the rear yard;

 

AND THAT the owner be advised that if he is interested in development options for the property, Heritage Markham would work with him on a compatible addition to the existing house.

AND THAT Heritage Markham has no objection to the individual statements of cultural heritage value.

HERITAGE MARKHAM RECOMMENDS:

 

THAT Heritage Markham has no objection to the demolition of the existing one storey rear frame wing of 4230 19th Ave.;

 

AND THAT Heritage Markham has no objection to the footprint, form, and massing of the proposed rear addition to 4230 19th Ave.;

 

AND THAT Heritage Markham supports:

·        Changing the proposed windows in the addition to simpler one over one sash configurations to match what might have been originally been found on the existing heritage house;

·        Deleting the 12”high metal railing from the edge of the flat portions of the proposed addition roof as it reflects the much earlier Second Empire architectural style;

·        Pairing the corner pillars on the proposed porch entrance, or increasing their cross sectional dimensions or providing thicker, slightly tapered, pillars more typical of early 20th century porches and better suited to carry the perceived visual weight of the entrance porch roof;

 

AND THAT Heritage Markham request the applicant to consider cladding the addition in V groove or clapboard rather than board and batten and that the whole addition take on a simplified look to complement the existing heritage building.

HERITAGE MARKHAM RECOMMENDS:

 

THAT Heritage Markham has no objection to the proposed details for the hard surface landscape component of the landscape project for the McKay Art Centre;

 

AND THAT Heritage Markham offers the following design suggestions:

 

-           that the colour of the railings be black or dark green;

-           that all attempts be explored to obtain funding to face the Upper Terrace retaining wall in stone;

-           that vegetation be introduced to help hide those areas of exposed concrete with sandblasted finish;

 

AND THAT Urban Design staff be requested to look into the possibility of reintroducing the stone wall into this project;

 

AND THAT Heritage Markham be given the opportunity to review any proposals for exterior lighting;

 

AND THAT any further review of minor design changes be delegated to Heritage Section staff.

23.       PLANNING FOR TOMORROW 2007,

region of york growth management strategy

            Public Engagement and Consultation PROCESS (16.11)

Councillor Burke provided information respecting the Region of York's Planning for Tomorrow 2007 Public Engagement and Consultation Process which started on May 1, 2007, throughout the Region to obtain input on the York Region Preliminary Draft Sustainability Strategy: Towards a Sustainable Region. Councillor Burke expressed concern that the promotional materials for the public consultation process do not mention the protection of built heritage.

 

HERITAGE MARKHAM RECOMMENDS:

 

THAT Council request the Region of York to identify the protection of built heritage as a goal in its Planning for Tomorrow 2007 Public Consultation Process on the York Region Preliminary Draft Sustainability Strategy: Towards a Sustainable Region.
