RECOMMENDATION:
That the report entitled “Festivals and Events Ontario Conference – Markham, Ontario, March 2 – 5, 2011, be received;
That the Town sponsor the Festivals and Events Ontario Conference at a
cost not to exceed $15,000 to be funded from the 2011 Capital Accounts;
And that the cost of the sponsorship be expensed from within the
pre-approved 2011 “Festival and Events Ontario Conference” Capital Budget,
And that Staff be authorized and directed to do all things necessary to give effect to this resolution.

PURPOSE:
DISCUSSION:
Festivals and
Events are big business in Ontario. Festival
& Events Ontario (FEO) estimates that tourism spending at Ontario’s more than
2,000 festivals and events may cumulatively generate between $1.5 - $2 billion
in contributions to Regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP), support the creation
of upwards of 20,000 full-year-equivalent jobs, and contribute over $500
million in annual tax revenues.
The FEO has
approached the Town of Markham to be a “Host Sponsor”. As a Host Sponsor the Town will be entitled
to:
- The exclusive hosting of the FEO Hall of Fame Gala dinner
- Mayor Scarpitti to co-host both the opening ceremonies, introducing Minister Michael Chan, Tourism Minister, and also Friday’s Hall of Fame dinner
- Co-host the Marketplace which will provide the Town of Markham with a premium booth location
- Town to host York Region business associations and Chambers during the Thursday March 3, opening ceremonies and to meet FEO suppliers and exhibitors
- A full page color ad (inside-front) in the 2010/2011 FEO Consumer Guide to Festivals & Events Ontario
- Four tickets to the Conference

- Promote
awareness of Markham’s diversity and success as one of Canada’s most
prestigious municipalities
- Promote
Markham as a tourism destination
- Promote
awareness of Markham’s own festivals and events, and the talented
residents and businesses in these sectors.
