SUBJECT:

Amend Schedule 19 of Traffic By-law 106-71 to include Golden Avenue and Fonda Road Traffic Control Signal

RECOMMENDATION:

That the attached by-law to amend Schedule 19 of Traffic By-law 106-71, pertaining to “Traffic Control Signals”, by including the traffic control signal at the intersection of Golden Avenue and Fonda Road, be approved.

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this report is to amend the Schedule 19 Traffic By-law 106-71, pertaining to “Traffic Control Signals”, by including the Golden Avenue and Fonda Road traffic control signal.

BACKGROUND:

On October 8, 2002 Council approved the installation of traffic control signals at the intersection of Golden Avenue and Fonda Road. This traffic control signal was proposed to replace both the permanent and temporary crossing guards at the concerned intersection.

DISCUSSION:

The intersection of Golden Avenue and Fonda Road is located north of Denison Street, between Middlefield Road and Markham Road.  The intersection is presently controlled by an all-way stop control and two crossing guards.

The Traffic Control Signal Warrant concluded the concerned intersection met the minimum technical requirements for signals, based on high pedestrian volumes generated by the Markham Gateway Public School and their walk to school program.   The two crossing guards will be replaced upon the traffic control signal installation completion, expected later this year.

 FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Funding for the traffic control signal is allocated in the 2003 Capital Budget, under account number 83 5350 5220 005.
