SUBJECT:

Main Street Unionville South Parking Prohibition

RECOMMENDATION:

THAT Schedule 1 of Parking By-law 336-88, be amended to include a “No Parking Prohibition” on the west side of Main Street South Unionville from 17.0 meters north of the shared property line of # 24 and 28 Main Street Unionville to a point 120.0 meters South, be approved;

AND THAT the attached by-law be approved;

AND THAT the Operations and Asset Management Department be directed to install the appropriate signs upon approval of the attached by-law.

PURPOSE:

This report is to recommend a “No Parking Prohibition” on a section of Main Street South Unionville.

BACKGROUND:

The Engineering Department received a request to implement a No Parking Prohibition on Main Street Unionville South.  Currently, cars are parked next to the entrances of properties # 24 and # 28 Main Street Unionville, hence causing sight line visibility problems for motorists entering and exiting the subject area.

OPTIONS/DISCUSSION:

In response to concerns expressed in the area, staff undertook site visits to confirm the current problem. The results of the site visit conclude that cars and trucks from adjacent employers are parked on both sides of Main Street South, causing operational problems for passenger vehicles and delivery trucks entering and exiting this business area. In addition, parked cars are also causing sightline visibility problems. To improve the operational and sightline visibility problems, it is recommended that a parking prohibition be established.

Main Street South Unionville is currently a four-lane road serving residential and business land uses. An Environmental Assessment study is in progress to review the future road configuration will include an assessment of the long term parking needs in this area.  The proposed parking prohibition is needed to address existing operational issues as an interim solution.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The cost of labour and materials to implement these parking measures are accounted for in the 2004 budget for the Operations and Asset Management Department.

BUSINESS UNITS CONSULTED AND AFFECTED:

Subject to Council’s approval the Operations and Asset Management Department will install the proper signage for the proposed No Parking Prohibition on Main Street Unionville.
