The Special Council Meeting for Community Recognition convened at 7:11 p.m. on February 7, 2013 in the Council Chamber.  Mayor Frank Scarpitti presided.

 

 

On behalf of Council, Mayor Frank Scarpitti welcomed members of the public to the Special Council Meeting for Community Recognition.  He noted the purpose of the meeting is to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made contributions to the community of Markham.

 

 

Mayor Frank Scarpitti announced with sadness the passing of former Regional Councillor/Deputy Mayor Ron Moran on January 30, 2013.  Mayor Frank Scarpitti noted Mr. Moran was a Member of Council from 1973 to 1991.  Council observed a moment of silence dedicated to Mr. Moran's memory.

            (9TH PAN AMERICAN GAMES WINNER
             - 2 GOLD MEDAL AND 1 SILVER MEDAL) (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized Philip Wong, winner of 2 Gold Medals and 1 Silver Medal in Wushu (a form of martial arts) at the 9th Pan American Games held in Mexico from October 18 to 22, 2012.

 

 

(2)        2012 HERITAGE COMMUNITY RECOGNITION AWARDS (12.2.6)

 

The Ontario Heritage Trust's Heritage Community Recognition Awards Program celebrates volunteer achievement in identifying, preserving, protecting and promoting local heritage.  It recognizes that community volunteers play a vital role in conserving Ontario's heritage.  Individuals are nominated by Municipal Councils.

 

Council recognized the recipients of the 2012 Heritage Community Recognition Awards including:

            -           Wing Morse, Natural Heritage Category

            -           Sid Kiyoshi Ikeda, Cultural Heritage Category (Absent)

The 40th Markham Santa Claus Parade was held on November 24, 2012.

 

Mr. Jim Sandiford, Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise Inc., provided opening comments and thanked all the participants and volunteers who helped make the 2012 Markham Santa Claus Parade a success.

            - EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR 2012 AWARD (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized the Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill, Employer of the Year 2012 Award winner – GENIVAR.

 

Michelle Albert, Director of Operations, Water and Wastewater and Fatema Khalfan, EIT, Infrastructure Management and Planning, were in attendance on behalf of Genivar.

 

Flo McLellan, Program Director, was in attendance on behalf of Smart Commute Markham-Richmond Hill.

 

 

(5)        TAIWAN ENTREPRENEURS SOCIETY TAIPEI/TORONTO (T.E.S.T.)
            - RECOGNITION FOR PROVIDING 20 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
             AND SUPPORT (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized the Taiwan Entrepreneurs Society Taipei/Toronto (T.E.S.T.) for providing 20 years of community service and support.

 

T.E.S.T. is a non-profit organization, established in 2003 and organized by Taiwan entrepreneurs residing in Toronto.  The organization is composed of a diversified group of members from different walks of life striving to enhance business opportunities utilizing its network.  T.E.S.T. has been recognized by the communities as an organization that continuously makes significant contributions to our society.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti spoke of Mr. John Honsberger's enthusiasm for sharing his enjoyment of a park located at Elgin Street and Vintage Lane in Thornhill has bee.  As Mr. Honsberger was unable to attend the meeting this date, Council deferred the recognition to a future meeting.
