The Community Services Committee convened at the hour of 1:05 p.m. with Councillor Alex Chiu in the Chair.

1.         REPLACING OF FIRE DEPARTMENT BY-LAW 148-73
FILE: 7.15

 

After some discussion, Committee agreed to amend the replacement by-law to reflect in

Section 9 j) wording as outlined in The Fire Protection and Prevention Act, and to delete Section 9 k).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

That it be recommended to Council that By-law #148-73, as amended, which is a by-law to establish a Fire Department, be repealed;

 

And that Council enact a replacement by-law.

5.         MINUTES – MAYORS YOUTH TASK FORCE
DECEMBER 11, 2001 & JANUARY 8, 2002

RECOMMENDATION:

 

That the minutes of the Mayors Youth Task Force meetings held on December 11, 2001, and January 8, 2002, be received.

6.         UPDATE ON THE DOG LEASH FREE
PILOT PROJECT AT MILNE DAM PARK
FILE: 2.8 & 6.3

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

That the report dated February 11, 2002, entitled "Update on the Dog Leash Free Pilot Project at Milne Dam Park", and the letter from Ms. Veronica Molnar, 188 Church Street, Markham, be received as information;

 

And that the letter from Ms. Molnar be referred to staff for response.

7.         CENTRALIZED FIRE DISPATCH UPDATE
            FILE 7.15

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

That the communication, dated January 25, 2002, from the Region of York advising that Regional Council supports in principle the concept of a centralized fire dispatch service for York Region, and requesting other municipalities to consider and respond to this before March 29, 2002 be received, and referred to the Commissioner of Community Services to report to either the Finance & Administrative Committee or Committee of the Whole.

8.         DEATH OF JEFFREY SHIPLETT, CHAPLAIN
            MARKHAM FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
            FILE 7.15

 

The Commissioner of Community Services advised of the recent death of Mr. Jeffrey Shiplett, Chaplain with Markham's Fire and Emergency Services Department since October of 2000.  Mr. Shiplett's duties involved support to both firefighters and members of the public.

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

That Committee expresses its deepest sympathy to Mr. Schiplett's family, and great appreciation for his work with the Town of Markham.
