Moved by
Regional Councillor F. Scarpitti
Seconded by
Councillor A. Chiu
That
the following resolution passed unanimously by the members of the Markham
Conservation Committee at their meeting on June 27, 2002, be referred to Environmental Services staff for
clarification and report to the Finance & Administrative Committee:
"WHEREAS the Markham
Conservation Committee has demonstrated its desire to see pesticide use reduced
to as close to nothing as is possible;
And whereas the Committee
believes that public awareness and education are essential to a healthier
environment than a ban on the use of pesticides through by-law, which would be
unenforceable;
And whereas the
Town has reduced its own use of pesticides on public lands;
And whereas
Council has an established committee, the Markham Pesticide Reduction Steering
Committee, in place;
Now therefore be
it resolved that the Markham Conservation Committee recommends strongly to
Council that it provide all the necessary support to the Markham Pesticide
Reduction Steering Committee so that it may carry on a vigorous educational
campaign to persuade Markham citizens to reduce drastically their use of
pesticides and to provide information on alternative practices."
