The Special Council Meeting for Community Recognition convened at 7:07 PM on May 8, 2014 in the Council Chamber.  Deputy Mayor Jack Heath presided from 7:07 PM to 7:51 PM and Mayor Frank Scarpitti presided thereafter.

 

 

The Village Voices Choir sang Canada's National Anthem O Canada prior to the presentations.

 

 

On behalf of Council, Deputy Mayor Jack Heath welcomed members of the public to the Special Council Meeting for Community Recognition.  He noted the purpose of the meeting is to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made contributions to the community of Markham.

2.         PRESENTATIONS

 

 

(1)        2013 HERITAGE COMMUNITY RECOGNITION AWARDS (12.2.6)

 

The Ontario Heritage Trust's Heritage Community Recognition Awards Program celebrates volunteer achievement in identifying, preserving, protecting and promoting local heritage. It recognizes that community volunteers play a vital role in conserving Ontario's heritage. Individuals are nominated by Municipal Councils.

 

Council recognized the recipients of the 2013 Heritage Community Recognition Awards including:

 

-           Fred Watt and Joyce Nelson Watt, Built Heritage Category

-           Evelin Ellison, Cultural Heritage Category

-           Jane McCulloch, Natural Heritage Category

 

Michael Sawchuck, Manager of Conservation and Acquisitions Services, Ontario Heritage Trust, was in attendance.

 

 

(2)        2014 MARKHAM DISTRICT ENERGY SUSTAINABILITY
BURSARY AWARDS CEREMONY (12.2.6)

 

Mr. Bruce Ander, President and CEO, Markham District Energy Inc., provided background information on the Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary.

 

The Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary was established to help cultivate and nurture environmental leadership.  The Bursary encourages and rewards graduating Markham high school students who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence and participation in environmental extracurricular, volunteer and community service activities; and who intend to study sciences related to the environment full-time at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

 

Council extended congratulations to the recipients of the 2014 Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary. The recipients are:

-           Alyssa Tang, St. Augustine Catholic High School

-           Sarena Karpouzis, St. Brother Andre Catholic High School

Council recognized the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient Bruce Ander.

 

 

(4)        ANDREW CHUNG AND MELANIE CHUNG
            - REELWORLD FILM FESTIVAL (12.2.6)

 

A short video clip of the movie named "Millions" was played.  The movie was shown during the ReelWorld Film Festival in First Markham Cineplex Theatre.  Andrew Chung, Director and Producer, highlighted some of the scenes where the filming took place in Markham.

 

Council recognized Andrew Chung & Melanie Chung, Director and Producer for the movie.

 

 

(5)        VICTOR FAN
            - REELWORLD FILM FESTIVAL (12.2.6)

 

A short video clip of the movie named "Toronto Sounds" was played.  The movie was shown during the ReelWorld Film Festival in First Markham Cineplex Theatre.

 

Council recognized Victor Fan, Short Film Editor for the movie.

            TEAM CANADA UNDER-18 NATIONAL WOMEN’S HOCKEY
            - GOLD MEDAL WINNER
AT THE
            INTERNATIONAL ICE HOCKEY FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIPS

Council recognized Gold Medallist Breanne Wilson-Bennett, Team Canada Under-18 National Women's Hockey Player, at the International Ice Hockey Federation Championships.

 

 

(7)        DAN FILGIANO
            - SILVER MEDAL WINNER AT THE
            2014 ONTARIO MASTERS PROVINCIAL SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized Silver Medallist Dan Filgiano in 100 metres Individual Medley and in breaking three Canadian Records, 50-59 Age Group Category, for 50 metres Breaststroke, 100 metres Breaststroke and 200 Breaststroke, at the 2014 Ontario Masters Provincial Swim Championships.

 

 

(8)        CHRIS WILLIAMSON
            - BRONZE MEDAL WINNER AT THE
            2014 SOCHI PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES (12.2.6)

 

There was a short video clip played on the four-time Paralympic Medallist Chris Williamson.

 

Council recognized Chris Williamson for all his outstanding Paralympic achievements and for winning the Bronze Medal in Slalom at the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Winter Games.

 

 

(9)        CHLOE ESSEARY
            - GOLD MEDAL WINNER AT THE
            ATHLETICS ONTARIO YOUTH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized Gold Medallist Chloe Essery in High Jump at the Athletics Ontario Youth Indoor Championships held at the York University.

 


 

(10)      TSUNG TSIN HAKKA ASSOCIATION 30TH ANNIVERSARY (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized the 30th Anniversary of the Tsung Tsin Hakka Association.

 

Philip Yapsam, President of Tsung Tsin Hakka Association, was in attendance.

 

 

(11)      VILLAGE VOICES CHOIR 25TH ANNIVERSARY (12.2.6)

 

The Choir sang Canada's National Anthem O Canada prior to the presentations

 

Council recognized the 25th Anniversary of the Village Voices Choir.  

 

 

 

(12)      THORNHILL GARDEN AND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
            - 100TH ANNIVERSARY (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized the 100th Anniversary of the Thornhill Garden and Horticultural Society.

 

President Bernadette Burns and several Board Members, Thornhill Garden and Horticultural Society, were in attendance.

            - 2014 BOSTON MARATHON WINNER (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized Keijo Taivassalo, Winner of the 2014 Boston Marathon, 75-79 Age Group Category.

 

 

(14)      ACROSS U-HUB
            - 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CITY MOSAIC EVENT (12.2.6)

 

Council recognized the 10th Anniversary of the City Mosaic Event for Across U-Hub.
