The Committee of the Whole meeting convened at the hour of 12:35 p.m. with Regional Councillor Gord Landon in the Chair.

1.         APPOINTMENTS TO ADVISORY
            COMMITTEES AND BOARDS (16.24)

 

Members had before them information with respect to the Town's Policy on appointments to advisory committees. 

 

Members also had before them a list of names of applicants who had applied for each of the advisory committees and boards.

 

The Manager, Secretariat Services was in attendance and asked for the direction of Committee with respect to the scheduling of interviews for the committees or boards.

 

 

 

Committee advised that they would examine each of the committees listed in the summary documents and recommend Council appointments where possible and also determine if interviews would be required.

 

RECOMMENDED:

 

That the following appointments be confirmed, and further that the selection review process for appointments be undertaken by the appointed elected officials for each respective committee, where necessary:

And that the Terms of Reference for the Markham Race Relations Committee be amended to reduce the number of Council appointments from four to two Members;

 

And that the Terms of Reference for the Markham Conservation Committee be amended to increase the public membership, presently at eight, by two, to ten persons;

 

And that the Terms of Reference for the Canada Day Committee be amended to reduce the number of Council appointments from four to three Members;

 

 

And that the Terms of Reference for the Markham Museum Board be amended to increase the public membership to nine from five persons, and that the nine include one representative from the Markham Historical Society;

 

And that the Terms of Reference for the Markham Theatre Board be amended to increase the Council appointments from three to four Members;

 

And that the following Councillors be appointed to an Interview Committee to review applications and interview applicants for vacant positions on the Committee of Adjustment:

 

            Councillor George McKelvey

            Councillor Stan Daurio

            Councillor Erin Shapero

            Councillor Alex Chiu

            Councillor Joe Virgilio

 

And that the CEO, Markham Public Libraries be invited to take part in the interview process for the membership of the Markham Public Library Board;

 

And further that an additional advertisement be placed in the local newspapers with respect to the following advisory committees and boards: 

 

            Canada Day Committee

            Markham Race Relations Committee

            Property Standards Committee

 

 

 

Staff was directed to prepare packages to be forwarded to those Councillors involved with the interviewing of applicants.   Dates and times would be arranged for those persons to be interviewed.  It is anticipated that appointments will be considered by Council at its Committee of the Whole meeting to be held on Monday, March 19, 2001.
