The Community
Services Committee convened at the hour of 1:15 p.m. with Councillor Alex Chiu
in the Chair.
DISCLOSURE OF INTEREST
REQUESTS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF DEPUTATIONS
REGARDING MATTERS ON THIS AGENDA
1. REVISED SPECIAL EVENT SUPPLY LIST (3.5
& 6.0 & 12.1)
The
matter of the purchase of a travelling stage with possible corporate
sponsorship was discussed. Staff
indicated that the cost of a travelling stage is approximately $140,000, and
that this amount was included as part of the 2001 Capital Budget submission.
RECOMMENDATION:
That
the recommended changes to the Special Event Supply List, as illustrated on the
attached Appendix B, be approved.

2. MAYOR'S YOUTH TASK FORCE
YOUTH PROGRAM UPDATE (16.21)
RECOMMENDATION
That
the presentation by Jacquie Hermans, Community Resource Coordinator, with
respect to the Town's Youth Program, be received for information;
And
that congratulations be extended to Jacquie Hermans, other Recreation Services
Department staff and Members of the Mayor's Youth Task Force for their work.
3. MARKHAM 2000 FINAL REPORT (16.36)
Committee
requested staff to prepare a brief memorandum breaking down the projects by
category, including project costs: a) Mayor and Regional Councillors, and b)
Ward Councillor.
RECOMMENDATION:
That
the presentation by Susan Stiles, Program Coordinator, and report entitled
'Markham 2000 Final Report', dated April 2, 2001, be received for information.
4. MINUTES
– MARKHAM MUSEUM BOARD
FEBRUARY 7, 2001 (6.7)
RECOMMENDATION:
That the
minutes of the Markham Museum Board meeting held on February 7, 2001, be
received.
5. NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS AWARENESS WEEK
MAY 20 TO 26, 2001 (3.4 &
5.0 & 12.2.6)
RECOMMENDATION:
That
the week of May 20 to 26, 2001 be proclaimed as National Public Works Week in
the Town of Markham;
And
further that Council endorse the participation of staff in this event.
6. CANADA DAY COMMITTEE (16.0)
The
Commissioner of Community Services advised that a meeting of the Canada Day
Committee is being arranged for mid-April at the Markham Civic Centre, and
Councillors will be advised of the date, when confirmed.
It
was noted that one representative from the Parks Department and one
representative from Street Services Department are involved with the Committee,
and it was requested that a representative from the Recreation Services
Department also be included to assist with details, such as programming and
marketing.
7. ANGUS
GLEN COMMUNITY CENTRE AND LIBRARY
STEERING COMMITTEE (6.6)
In response to a query of Committee regarding future meetings of a
steering committee respecting the Angus Glen Community Centre and Library, the
Commissioner of Community Services advised that it is anticipated that a
meeting will be scheduled for the last week of April.
Members discussed related matters, including: errors and omission/risk
management insurance; proposed ice surfaces at Angus Glen; the functional,
well-designed sports facility "Sports Village", which is a
public-private partnership facility on Rutherford Road in the City of Vaughan;
and "Iceland Arena", which is a similar sports facility on Matheson
Blvd. East in the City of Mississauga.
The Commissioner of Community Services advised that information
relating to public-private facilities is being included as part of the Angus
Glen report being prepared for Council.
